UPDATE: Lafayette firefighters put out a burning vacant building on West Willow Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called to the 2100 block of West Willow around 8 a.m., and found a house on fire with heavy smoke coming out of the roof. After about 20 minutes they brought the fire under control; the building was heavily damaged.

The building was being used by the owner for storage; they told firefighters that homeless people had been inside several times.

Lafayette Parish Sheriff's deputies and Lafayette Police helped fire investigators identify the man who was in the building as Reginald Riggs of Opelousas. He was arrested and booked with one count simple arson and one count unauthorized entry.

No injuries were reported, fire officials say.
