Ground was broken today on a project that will add wings to Evangeline Elementary and Acadian Middle schools.

The wing at Evangeline – which has the most portable classrooms of any school in the Lafayette Parish School System – will replace 28 portable classrooms and add 37,000 square feet of learning space for the students. The wing at Acadian will replace four portables and add about 5,700 square feet to the school, said interim Superintendent Irma Trosclair.

“These are two of seven planned or started wing expansions across the district,” Trosclair said. “We’re very excited. This is a very exciting morning.”

Trosclair said the projects will move children from portable classrooms to brick-and-mortar classrooms, which “will improve our service to the children in Lafayette Parish.”
