Volunteers with the American Red Cross are helping reduce house fires in Acadiana.

They spent the day installing smoke alarms in homes across Lafayette and Broussard as part of their Sound the Alarm initiative.

According to the American Red Cross, working smoke alarms cut the risk of fire injury and death in half.

Over the last 3 weeks, volunteers have visited more than fifteen communities across Louisiana. Through those efforts, 1,900 smoke alarms have been installed, making over 1000 homes safer.
