KATC is Getting Answers on damaged sidewalks in a Carencro neighborhood after causing accessibility issues for some residents, like Angel Siner.

She has used a wheelchair her whole life, born with spina bifida, hydrocephalus and other issues. But those conditions aren’t what’s getting in her way, it’s the cracked and uneven sidewalks.

“Some spots in the neighborhood are in bad condition, so she has to take the streets to get around until the next smooth part,” said Angel’s father, Jude Siner.

He said it’s become a safety concern because of the increased traffic on their street.

“The traffic through here, sometimes people don’t pay attention to the speed limit,” he said.

Carencro City Manager Don Chauvin said the issue was brought to his attention at Monday night’s council meeting by another resident in the neighborhood.

“We didn’t have any idea that there was an issue with somebody with accessibility needs in that area. It really does raise the level of importance and sense of urgency on it,” said Chauvin.

He’s compiled a list of 8 sidewalks throughout the city that need to be repaired so concrete workers can fix them.

The solution brings relief to the Siner family.

“So we make it safer for her and everybody else that’s in a wheel chair, because she’s not the only one in a wheel chair, there’s 5-6 other people in a wheel chair,” said Jude.

The Carencro city manager said the concrete company will come out Thursday morning to assess the sidewalks on the list.

He said the repairs should be done within the next few weeks.
