The Acadiana Park Nature Station hosted its annual butterfly day today.

It coincides with the Lafayette City-Parish Government’s celebration of Community Development Week, during which the Acadiana Park Nature Station, the Lafayette Science Museum and the RoseHouse Senior Center will host a variety of free activities such as open houses, presentations, tours and workshops throughout the week.

Margaret Vincent, naturalist at the Nature Station, said butterfly day is a way to introduce visitors to pollenators, but also to promote nature in general.

“This is definitely one of Lafayette’s hidden gems,” Vincent said of the Nature Station. “We want to expose that, to get people out into the sunshine, into the open air, to see some of the great things we have.”

Today there weren’t that many butterflies, but dragonfly fans were all set.

“We have a lot of sunshine today, and a good breeze, and I think that brings a little bit of joy to everyone’s life,” Vincent said. “Out today we the gulf skipper, a lot of yellow top, butter top in bloom, and mainly the dragonflies have been the winner today.”

Vincent said her favorites are the north trails of the station.

“I particularly like our north trails, I think that’s where our best hiking is, some of our more primitive trails,” she said. “I think a lot of people don’t know we have that, but it’s the best.”
