Kaplan woman dies in crash, charges upgraded for driver

LAFAYETTE, La. – A 26-year-old Kaplan woman succumbed to injuries sustained in a car crash on Wednesday and the charges for the driver have been upgraded.

Rebecca McDaniels died on February 11, 2019, at a local hospital as a result of her injuries sustained during the February 6th crash in the 400 block of General Mouton Avenue, according to the spokesperson for the Lafayette Police Department. McDaniels was a passenger in the vehicle which struck a telephone pole.

The driver, Jason Trudel, 26, of Rayne, was initially arrested for vehicle negligent injury, OWI, hit and run, careless operation, possession of drug paraphernalia and battery of a police officer, the spokesperson said. The charge of negligent injury has been amended to vehicular homicide as of February 11, 2019.
