Aliens from all over the galaxy are invading Lafayette’s Cajundome Convention Center for the annual Krewe of Carnivale en Rio Ball.

This year’s theme is “Close Encounters.” I can only assume aliens heard about Acadiana’s first Mardi Gras ball of the season, which promoted the invasion.

“It’s probably a lot different than what you see in traditional Mardi Gras krewes. You’re going to aliens from all over the world and universe. You’ll probably also see some people you didn’t know were aliens,” said King of Rio Ernest Franz.

This year’s queen is Ernest’s wife Brenda Franz.

“Of course it’s great being husband and wife as king and queen. We’ve really enjoyed it. We picked the colors and went with it.”

Aside from the extraterrestrial activity, the krewe’s royalty will be there along with a light show, live music and DJS.

The bright colors and lights of the ball are a preview of what’s to come.

“Rio is one of the best parades because of how colorful and vibrant their floats are. I feel like they really go all out, and they take the time to make sure that they throw a good party,” said ball attendee Danielle Files.

The Krewe of Carnivale en Rio Parade will roll February 23.
