When you’re ready to part ways with your Christmas tree, you can do so while helping the environment.

Instead of taking up space in a landfill, LCG is turning Christmas trees into compost.

“Having all of the Christmas trees is just a huge waste of space. The landfills we have here in Lafayette Parish, we have to go all the way to Jeff Davis Parish to dispose of our trash. So it’s a win, win and we’re really lucky to be able to do that with our Christmas trees,” said Bess Foret, LCG’s environmental quality manager.

Waste Management will come to pick up trees from the curb on trash pickup days and bring it to the compost facility off Dugas Road. LCG says that this option reduces waste and the nutrient-rich compost is available for residents to pick up.

“They come here for a beneficial use where they come and get ground up and turned, and after several months, it turns into compost that residents can come and pick up and utilize in their gardens,” said Foret. “It helps the soil grow, you know, aerate the soil so you have better things going on in your garden and makes things better for our environment around here.”

If you’re not a Lafayette Parish resident, you can pay $6.00 per cubic yard (equivalent to a half-ton pickup bed full).
