Group creating mats for homeless with grocery bags

A group in Carencro is using grocery bags to help out the less fortunate in the community.

The Bag Ladies and One Man have been working to create the mats for homeless individuals since last spring.

Charmane Derousselle, a member of the group, says she learned about making the mats while visiting her sister’s home while her sister was in the ministry. After deciding to help out the public somehow, Derousselle knew she could create these mats to give back to the homeless in the community.

Derousselle says it takes about 500 to 700 bags to make just one mat. They are used for sleeping on or padding and protection for homeless individuals.

A group of women crochets the mats together. There are about 20 people helping the Bag Ladies and One Man. Since their start, the group has created about 20 mats.

In the next two weeks, the group will be giving out these mats to those less fortunate in the area. A date for delivery has still not been set.

The group is hoping to see their numbers grow so that they can reach more people in need.
