HUT wins a Governor’s Gold Award

The Hand Up Thrift is celebrating an honor this week. The HUT received the 2018 GOLD Award.

HUT is being recognized as Employer of the Year for the GOLD – Governor’s Outstanding Leadership in Disabilities award.

HUT officials will receive the award later this week in a ceremony hosted by Gov. John Bel Edwards and First Lady Donna Edwards.

The award celebrates those Louisiana citizens who have inspired positive changes within the disability community.

HUT was created in part to allow individuals who are unable to gain employment in just any community setting, job opportunities with a supportive, inclusive work environment.

The program has served to improve the social skills and confidence of the people who participate, and officials report that they love earning their own money – that helps them feel hopeful.

The HUT employs a diverse group of employees; 36% have some form of disability. The HUT also partners with other local non-profits to make annual donations.

The HUT is located at 105 Leonie St., directly behind Lafayette Music on Johnston.
