If your trick-or-treater comes home with maybe a little more sugar than you’d like them to have, then a few dentists here in Acadiana will buy it and send it off for a good cause.

“We don’t want kids to not enjoy any Halloween candy, but of course the over indulgence is when you run into issues,” Amanda Burleigh of Price & Associates Family Dentistry said.

The giveback is helping the little ones by keeping their teeth healthy, but also teaching them how to honor and thank those serving in the military.

“We take all of the candy that we collect and that all goes to troops overseas. It’s helping out kids here and troops overseas. It’s a great program all around,” Burleigh said.

To sweeten the deal, those who bring in their candy will get $1 dollar per pound as a way to thank them for the treats.

“We’ve taken in 20 and 50 pounds of candy depending on how much the word has gotten out there,” Burleigh said.

You can drop of your candy starting the day after Halloween until November 7. Once the candy is sent to troops, it’s a special treat to remind them of home and also help them connect with children they interact with.

“It’s just a great way to really make those connections with people you know. There’s the language barrier and the culture barrier, but everyone speaks the language of candy.”
