Texas teen arrested in burglary of Lafayette business

A Texas teen has been arrested in connection with the burglary of a Lafayette business on Thursday.

Police say they responded to a burglary in progress at a business located in the 4800 block of W. Congress Street in Lafayette. The suspect, identified as 17-year-old Demond’Tre Cockrell of Texas, allegedly entered the business and stole $5,000 worth of equipment.

Cockrell fled the scene, according to police, and a short pursuit followed. The vehicle was stopped by an officer in Scott and Cockrell was arrested. Police say that all stolen equipment was recovered from inside the vehicle.

While working with the Lafayette Police Department, Scott Police say they determined that the vehicle used during the burglary had reportedly been stolen from the Houston area.

Cockrell was arrested and booked on charges of Illegal Possession of Stolen Property by the Scott Police Department and for Simple Burglary and Possession of Burglary Tools by the Lafayette Police Department.
