A Lafayette family was not injured after a fire broke out in their home the first night they moved in.

Firefighters responded to the home in the 400 block of East Cedar Street in Lafayette at 10:48 pm for a residential fire. The initial call to 911 reported a mattress on fire under the carport, according to Alton Trahan, spokesman for the Lafayette Fire Department. When firefighters arrived, the carport was fully involved and the fire was spreading to the attic and the dwelling. Firefighters were able to contain the fire and stop it from spreading to the rest of the home, stated Trahan.

A family was moving in the home for the first night when the wife started smelling something burning. When they looked outside, a mattress set was on fire under the carport, according to the spokesman. The family exited the home and called 911.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
