Plans are in the works to add temporary buildings at Southside High School. The Lafayette School System is looking into adding the buildings because enrollment already has exceeded projections.

Assistant Superintendent Joe Craig says the campus was built for 1,800 students and there are currently 1,400 students on campus.

The school system expects Southside High to be at capacity next year.

When Southside opened in 2017, it was the first high school the system had built in 47 years. In 2017, Lafayette Parish’s population was 242,485, according to US Census figures. In 1971, the parish population was 109,716, according to US Census figures. That’s a 121 percent increase in population.

Craig says the board is not discussing rezoning at this time.
