Pregnant woman dies in Jeff Davis Parish crash

Posted

A woman from Basile and her unborn child have died from injuries she sustained in a crash on Tuesday.

On April 9, at 12:45 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D were notified of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Hwy. 90 and Hwy. 26, sixteen miles north of Jennings.

Troopers say a Ford F650 was traveling south on LA 26; when the truck entered the intersection, it hit the driver’s side of a pick-up truck driven by 21-year-old Shelby Bricyn Hawkins.

The impact caused the driver of the truck to veer off the left side of the highway into a ditch.

Hawkin’s truck also veered off the left side of the road and rolled over onto its roof before coming to rest in a grassy area near the highway’s intersection.

A spokesperson for Troop D says both Hawkins and the driver of the Ford F650 were wearing seat belts.

Hawkins, who was seven months pregnant, was taken to a hospital in Eunice with severe injuries. A juvenile passenger in Hawkin’s truck was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Ford F650 sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital. The driver voluntarily submitted a toxicology sample for testing, which was sent to Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

A toxicology sample was also obtained from Hawkins and submitted for analysis.

The driver of the Ford was cited for failure to yield to flashing signals.

The crash remains under investigation, and troopers say additional charges are possible.
