The Iberia Parish Council meets today at 6 p.m. in regular session.

There are several items on the agenda, including budget revisions for various projects and a discussion about installing merging lane signs on S. Lewis Street near the intersection of La. 83 (Weeks Island Road). To read the full agenda, scroll down.

After the Council meeting, the Executive Committee will meet to discuss several items, including a proposal to rededicate part of an existing sales tax and the home rule charter.

On the tax issue, Councilman Ricky Gonsoulin is asking the council to discuss and consider calling an election to re-dedicate part of the parish’s quarter-cent sales tax. Currently, the income is dedicated to the mosquito control program and drainage. Gonsoulin is suggesting part be used for road improvements.

Voters would have to approve this change. The council did discuss this proposal last fall, but no decision was made.

The committee also will discuss several recommendations made by the Home Rule Charter Ad Hoc committee to further amend the parish’s home rule charter. The home rule charter sets out how the government is structured and how it will be run.
