State Police say a New Iberia Police Officer was trying to break up a fight at about 2 a.m. and during the scuffle discharged his weapon. Both the officer and the person who was shot were treated and released from a local hospital, troopers said.

This case remains ongoing, and further charges may be possible, troopers said. No other information is available at this time.

As we reported earlier, NIPD requested that the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations investigate the shooting.

The preliminary investigation revealed that shortly after 2:00 am, an officer with the New Iberia Police Department attempted to arrest a person near the 100 block of Main St.

While trying to arrest the person, the officer became involved in a struggle with several people. During the altercation, the officer discharged his service weapon, striking a person, state police say.

The wounded man and the officer were treated at the scene for injuries, then transported to a local hospital. Both have been released from the hospital, and this morning troopers said that the people involved are in custody.
