The New Iberia Police Department has released an update on the suspicious package found Wednesday in the 400 block of Main Street.

Police say the package, which was left at a U.S. Postal Service drop box, was reported to the department at around 9:00 am on Wednesday. The New Iberia police and fire departments were able to secure the area. Louisiana State Police and the NIPD decided that the package would be destroyed as a precaution.

An investigation into the package led to a person being located and taken in for questioning. Police say the woman admitted to leaving the package at the location, but that her actions were not meant to cause harm. Police determined that the woman may have been suffering from mental health issues.

She was arrested on another outstanding warrant. She was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail on that warrant.

The Louisiana State Police Emergency Service Unit, New Iberia Fire Department, and the United States Postal Service helped in the investigation.
