U.S. 90 West experienced heavy congestion Thursday evening following a crash involving a tanker truck and a pickup.

The left lane was opened shortly after the highway closed. Congestion piled up for a few miles following that crash.

At around 5:30 p.m., state police closed  U.S. 90 westbound near Jeanerette following that crash near the sugar mill at Patouville Road. The tracks cross Hwy. 90 and have seen several serious wrecks over the years. Signs and flashing lights were installed earlier this year to limit the number of vehicles that are required to stop when at a railroad intersection.

Troopers say that there are severe injuries reported in the crash, but the extent is still unknown. The Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the driver of the pickup truck was seriously injured and airlifted to a local hospital.

KATC reached out to DOTD to see if there are in plans in place to prevent crashes at the railroad track. We did not receive a call back by news time.
