The Ville Platte City Council took the first steps to increase utility bills for the first time in 20 years, KVPI reports.
The council voted to introduce the ordinance, which would raise rates on water, gas and sewer an average of 35 percent, at a Tuesday meeting, the radio station reports.
A public hearing on the proposed increases will be held Tuesday at 4:45 p.m. at City Hall, and that hearing will be followed by a special council meeting to vote on the ordinance.
