A moped driver was killed on New Year’s Day in Evangeline Parish after a two-vehicle crash on US 190 near LA 3068.
Louisiana State Police Troop I says the crash occurred shortly after 10:00 pm and took the life of 56-year-old Maritan Romero of Basile.
An investigation by state police revealed that Romero was traveling in the right lane on US 190 on a 2018 Cabo Cruiser electric moped when he was struck from behind by another vehicle. According to troopers, Romero was ejected from the moped and came to rest in a nearby ditch.
Romero was wearing a DOT approved helmet, according to troopers, but sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Evangeline Parish Coroner’s Office.
State Police say impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
State Police did not say whether the driver who struck Romero will be charged. An investigation is still ongoing.
