Former teacher rearrested for additional sexual offenses with student

A former Calcasieu Parish teacher has been rearrested following an investigation into an alleged inappropriate sexual relationship with a student.

In the latest investigation by deputies, 34-year-old Deidre R. Smith of Sulphur was rearrested on with 9 counts of 1st-degree rape; 5 counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile; 2 counts of sexual battery; and 1 count oral sexual battery following an investigation.

On April 30 the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from an administrator at Lake Charles Charter Academy regarding a teacher, Deidre R. Smith. That complaint was alleging a possible inappropriate relationship with one of her 10-year-old students.

During the initial investigation, detectives say they learned Smith was having inappropriate contact with the boy since the end of 2018.  They say it was also learned Smith had sexual intercourse with the victim.  Smith was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with 1st-degree rape; and felony indecent behavior with a juvenile.

She was released later the same day on a $50,000 bond.

Thursday, after further investigation, Smith was re-arrested for numerous incidents that occurred in 2019 with the same 10-year-old boy.  She was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center.

Her bond is set at $1.3 million.
