Texas man arrested for attempted first-degree murder of a trooper

Posted

A Texas man is in jail for attempted murder of a state trooper after the trooper pulled him over in Lake Charles this morning.

According to a spokesman with Louisiana State Police Troop D, the trooper pulled over 25-year-old Julio R. De Los Rios of Donna, Texas, for a traffic violation on Common Street shortly before 5 a.m.

De Los Rios “became physically combative and actively fought the trooper” during a sobriety test, the spokesman says. The trooper then fired his gun but did not shoot the suspect, the release states.

De Los Rios was taken into custody. He was not injured.

When the suspect arrived at Troop D for processing, he allegedly refused to provide a toxicology sample. An on-call judge then approved a “no refusal” search warrant, allowing troopers to obtain blood samples from De Los Rios without his consent.

The suspect is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, resisting an officer by force, second-degree battery, DWI second offense, and improper turning at an intersection. He was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center with a $115,000 bond.

The trooper was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The Lake Charles Police Department and the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted with the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
