Today the second grade students at Breaux Bridge Primary got a visit from the members of the St. Martin Parish Fire District.

The firefighters spoke with 131 kids about a future career in fire service, and 18 of those students said they’d be interested in firefighting as a future career.  Those 18 students got to participate in an obstacle course based on firefighting skills such as hose carries, hose drags, forcible entry and spraying water.

“It was a great opportunity to introduce this future to the youth in our community,” said training officer David Douget. “Volunteer firefighting is a necessary service, and is needed in small communities, especially in St. Martin Parish.  We are luck to have 12 Fire Departments with over 240 Volunteer Firefighters in St. Martin Parish, and hopefully after today we have 18 future recruits.”
