At DOTD headquarters in Louisiana, 799 cones were displayed out on their front lawn as part of Work Zone Awareness Week.

Those cones, including 11 adorned with an image of Louisiana represented the number of people killed in work zone crashes.

The numbers were gathered from work zone deaths in 2017.

DOTD says they are focused on safety and preventing these incidents. Secretary Shawn Wilson says this is a priority while construction zones continue to pop up along the roadways in the state.

The deaths were not just workers but those people who were killed while traveling through those zones.

“If folks are speeding, if folks are distracted or drowsy, those are the things we want to bring attention to,” DOTD Secretary Shawn Wilson said. “These deaths could have been avoidable.”

Louisiana State Police reminds motorists to be mindful when traveling through work zones along the roadway.
