State Fire Marshal deputies and investigators with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating a Port Barre fire that destroyed a church.
Fire Marshal deputies were contacted in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 26, to assist with determining the origin and cause of a fire at St. Mary Baptist Church, located in the 100 block of Saqueget Road in Port Barre, a spokeswoman said.
St. Landry Fire District 2 received the fire call just after 2:30 a.m.
The investigation into what caused the fire is on-going with SFM investigators considering all possible factors, the spokeswoman said.
The ATF is assisting with the case due to the involvement of a religious organization, she said.
