The John Lewis Christmas campaign’s 2018 commercial is spreading Christmas cheer and a few tears as well.
This year’s commercial features Elton John and his iconic hit “Your Song.” In the commercial Elton sits at a piano playing out a few notes of his 1970’s hit. As the song plays, the viewer is taken through time, flashing back to moments that defined his career.
In the end it’s the piano that takes center stage as the gift that changed a young Elton John, then Reginald Kenneth Dwight’s life.
The young musician sits at the piano and plays out the final notes of the song, ending with John now 71 playing the final note on that same piano he received as a child.
The commercial ends with a statement that says “some gifts are more than just a gift.”
Each year the UK Department store John Lewis and Partners creates a commercial for the holiday season. They are known for eliciting a strong emotional pull.
According to People Magazine, a press release confirms that the piano was John’s grandmother’s – photos of the original instrument in Pinner, England, appear similar to the one used in the ad spot.
