An inmate at the Louisiana State Penitentiary died following a fight at the prison this morning.
Officials say 46-year-old Derrick Williams got into a fight with another inmate around 10 a.m.
Williams collapsed after the fight and was unresponsive, according to a spokesman with the state. He was rushed to the prison treatment center where he died a short time later.
His cause of death is still being determined.
The West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office and prison officials are investigating the fatal fight and will await the outcome of the investigation and an autopsy to determine whether any charges will be filed.
Williams was serving a June 16, 1997, life sentence out of Orleans Parish for various crimes, including:
- 2 counts of aggravated rape
- 2 counts of aggravated burglary
- Armed robbery
- Second-degree battery
- Attempted simple robbery
- Simple burglary
- Attempted simple escape
