A woman was arrested after allegedly shooting her husband at a Walmart in Alexandria late this morning.

Police say the shooting happened when 31-year-old Kayla Coutee met her husband in the parking lot of the store to exchange custody.

Three children were present during the shooting, according to a spokesperson with the Alexandria Police Department.

When officers arrived at the Walmart around 11:15 a.m., they found a 30-year-old man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Emergency personnel attempted to resuscitate the unidentified victim but were unsuccessful.

Police say the shooting happened in the outer section of the parking lot with few cars around.

Coutee was still on scene when officers arrived and was taken into custody for questioning. Based on the information detectives obtained from the investigation, Coutee was arrested and transferred to the Rapides Parish Detention Center where she was booked with second-degree murder.

The three children were taken to the police department where the Department of Children and Family Services arranged for family members to pick them up.

The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time to ensure all family members have been notified.
