The Kenner Police Department says they’ve arrested a woman for child desertion after she allegedly left her children in a locked vehicle with the windows up for over an hour.

Police say that witnesses at the scene were able to safely remove the children from the vehicle before calling 911. The two children were determined to be eleven months old and three years old. The mother, identified by police as 22-year-old Shawnise Sherman, allegedly approached the 911 caller and began arguing with them when she learned that the police had been called.

Police say that Sherman then attacked the caller.

An investigation revealed that Sherman had left her children in the locked car for an hour and a half before the children were discovered by the caller. The recorded temperatures, according to a release, was 91 degrees with a feel like temperature of 99.

Sherman was arrested and booked on charges of Child Desertion and Simple Battery.

The children were treated at the scene, according to police, and released to the care of another family member.
