BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – A Baton Rouge police officer still in training is accused of choking his girlfriend in front of her children.

The Advocate of Baton Rouge reports 31-year-old Jeffery Orlando Deandre Newman has been arrested on charges of domestic abuse battery strangulation and child endangerment. Baton Rouge Police spokesman Sgt. L’Jean McKneely Jr. says Newman had completed the department’s training academy and was in the middle of field training.

Newman’s arrest report says he found photos on his girlfriend’s phone from before they were dating and then attacked her Thursday.

Authorities say she fled their apartment and found a courtesy officer, who told police the woman appeared to have "been strangled badly." Newman is on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer.
