TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Authorities say a woman threw her 4-year-old daughter into a Florida river, killing the child.

News outlets report 26-year-old Shakayla Denson is charged with first-degree murder in the Thursday death of Je’Hyrah Daniels. A Tampa police news release says an investigation found that Denson stole a car and drove to the Hillsborough River, where witnesses say she waded in before tossing Je’Hyrah and leaving.

Authorities responding to reports of a child thrown into the river found the unconscious girl about 30 minutes later. She was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Police say they found Denson walking nearby and took her into custody. She is also charged with child abuse and grand theft auto. It’s unclear if she has a lawyer.
