A Eunice man issued a statement today, saying he won’t be taking care of Mt. Olive Cemetery anymore.

Kevin Brown said he doesn’t own the cemetery, and he doesn’t have any licenses to operate a cemetery. He said the Louisiana Cemetery Board considers the facility to be abandoned, and told him to stop keeping up the cemetery if he doesn’t have the proper licenses.

Brown said he’s helped maintain the cemetery for 30 years, and his grandmother and several local pastors were the ones actually running it. After they died, he just stayed on to keep up the lawn and assign burial plots.

Brown said he knows people say he and his family own it, but they don’t. He said the Cemetery board has come to the same conclusion. He said he’s "remorseful" that the cemetery is being abandoned, but it’s out of his hands.

"I am reaching out to seek an owner-operator to place the property in compliance according to law," he said. "If there are any local churches, private owners, civic clubs that would consider being owners, I am suggesting you contact the Louisiana Cemetery Board."
