Lake Charles Police have released the name of the man accused in the Wednesday shooting of a 12-year-old child.

Christopher James Williams, 19, was booked with aggravated second-degree battery and negligent injury.

Williams was identified as a suspect yesterday, and detectives learned he was hiding in a Pine Street home, a spokesman said. Police and SWAT surrounded the home, and made contact with Williams. He walked out of the house and was arrested without incident.

While being interviewed by investigators, Williams allegedly told authorities that he accidentally discharged a firearm, striking the victim.  Williams stated he then ran from the scene.  His statement was also corroborated by the victim, police say.

The case originally was reported as a drive-by shooting, but detectives learned the child was shot while several people were playing with a gun, police said. The victim is in stable condition.

The incident happened shortly before 1 p.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of Shattuck and O’Brien streets.
