Tonight, several venues in Acadiana paraded red, white and blue in observance of Independence Day.

The day kicked off at Bouligny Plaza and Main Street in New Iberia with a Fourth of July Parade followed by an Honor Guard ceremony. The event was highlighted by patriotic music.

In Breaux Bridge, St. Bernard Church held an Independence Day celebration and mass.

Broussard ended the festivities in Lafayette Parish with live music and fun for families at the Broussard Sports Complex at St. Julien Park. Fireworks capped off the night with a flashing spectacle.

Glenn Cunningham says nearly 50 years ago, his life changed forever. Back then he wasn’t enthusiastic about being drafted into the army. Now, he says he would do it all over again.

"I would do it in a heartbeat. I would do it with more enthusiasm now because I know what it can do for you," Cunningham says.

Cunningham says he attends the independence day festivities in Broussard with a grateful heart. He is happy to have served his country and happy to defend liberty around the world.

"My freedom. We were in the country to make sure our country stayed free. And its just a great feeling you know," he said.
