The trail ride community is taking action, after a deadly shooting in Evangeline Parish Sunday.
DeLanzo Veal was killed in that shooting and a woman was injured. Leaders and musicians say they don’t want this act of violence to become a trend in their community.
"We have a band-aid," musician Bryan Keith said. "A really bad band-aid that we got to rip off."
Jeffery Broussard, added "It’s hurting our culture and putting a big big dent in our music. We have so many people coming from all over the world supporting our music. I want to save our culture save our music."
The two men along with Amos Cravins, are now using their voices beyond the music and calling for change.
They’ve started a social media campaign and will host a concert in memory of the victim in the weekend shooting.
"He was a mediator whenever we had a club," Cravins said about Veal. "If we had a problem, he made sure things went smoothly and we didn’t have any troublemakers coming to our events. That’s why I’m standing up for him today and why the movement is going on."
Cravins started a Stop the Violence social media campaign in honor of Veal. A concert in Veal’s memory is set for July 12 at Feed N Seed in downtown Lafayette. Jeffery Broussard, Deuce Chambers, Nathan Plumbar and Bryan Keith are all set to perform.
"It doesn’t matter what we do," Keith said. "What matter is that we come together as a unit and Creole culture. If we don’t, we’ll lose it and we’re already almost there now. "
Stop the Violence concert will be held 7 p.m. On July 12 at the Feed-N-Seed, 106 N. Grant St., Lafayette. Admission is free.
