KATC has received several messages and calls about a problem viewers say is affecting the bread isles around Acadiana.

Viewers say that they have noticed in recent weeks that bread purchased from several stores around Acadiana has a strange smell and a different flavor than normal. The smell and taste, according to viewers, was affected in several bread products including Evangeline Maid.

We reached out to Flowers Foods, the company that oversees several bakeries in Acadiana and across the country, for comment. The company says that a recent shipment of inferior yeast from a supplier has impacted the quality and production of foodservice and retail bread and buns for some of its bakeries.

Flowers Foods says they have received several calls from concerned consumers about the taste and smell due to the inferior yeast. According to Flowers Foods, the supplier has confirmed that the yeast used in the bread is safe for consumption.

The company says they have arranged for an alternate supplier of yeast and are currently working to replace those affected products.  Flowers Foods expects all bakeries to return to normal operations in the next few days.
