A state judge sentenced Kenny Duffy to 40 years in prison last week for the October 2015 slaying of Calvin Gabriel Jr.

Duffy, 32, was booked with second-degree murder and convicted last fall of manslaughter.

Duffy admitted he killed Gabriel, 42, with a baseball bat, then set his body on fire. The crime happened on Camp Road and was investigated by Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s detectives.

After the November 2017 trial,  Judge Patrick Michot ordered a pre-sentencing investigation, which set a suggested range of 20 to 40 years for a sentence.

Michot handed down the 40-year sentence last week.

The lead detective was Drew Leblanc with the Sheriff’s Department and the case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Michele Billeaud.
