It’s been a tough time for movie theaters. They had to shut down during the COVID-19 pandemic, and many of them won’t be opening again in the near future. In New York and Los Angeles, for instance, public health officials still haven’t approved the reopening of theaters due to ongoing concerns about the coronavirus.
But theater-goers in some areas — including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Las Vegas and St. Louis — will be able to enjoy big-screen entertainment again soon. One theater chain, AMC Theatres, is planning to reopen 100 of its locations starting Aug. 20, reports Variety.
And to tempt people back onto their seats, they’ve come up with a pretty incredible offer. For Thursday, August 20 only, theater tickets will sell for 15 cents — the rough price of a movie ticket in 1920. That’s the year that the company started operating with a single movie screen in Kansas City, Missouri.
Here’s their Twitter post, explaining the deal:

The movies on offer include “The Empire Strikes Back,” the second release in the “Star Wars” series, and the box office superhero smash “Black Panther.”
From August 21, tickets for a range of older films, like “Back to the Future,” “Ghostbusters” and “Grease,” will be available for $5. But new releases will be screened, too. These include “Unhinged,” a psychological thriller starring Russell Crowe, and the superhero horror film “The New Mutants,” which is based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name. It’s intended to be the last installment of the “X-Men” film series.
These new films will cost $10 per ticket. Here’s a tweet from AMC about one of the new releases:

AMC will engage in a phased reopening, with other theaters returning to business in waves. The company hopes to have around two-thirds of its U.S. theaters open in time for the September 3 release of Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” a spy film starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh.
The theater chain is instituting AMC Safe & Clean procedures to keep customers safe. Face masks will be required for both guests and employees, but may be removed for eating or drinking. Auditoriums will be filled to 30% capacity or less. New cleaning procedures have been put into place as well.

Other theater chains are planning their reopenings as well. Regal Cinemas plans a restart on August 21 with $5 flashback movies. Cinemark’s phased opening has already begun and is continuing throughout the month.
