Not everyone has the chance to grow up in a productive kitchen.
The lessons of properly stirring a roux, or making sure that your steak is perfectly seared isn't a guarantee, and for those who may have missed those lessons from mom or grandma there's Earline Thomas.
Earline has been the culinary instructor at SLCC for years now, teaching students not just how to cook but how to run a kitchen or a cafeteria.
She was the beneficiary of some of those early lessons growing up in a kitchen learning how to cook from watching various family members during her childhood.
Growing up on a farm Earline learned at an early age the importance of fresh ingredients, which is a lesson she still teaches here students to this very day.
Spending the majority of her career in restaurants, it was a friend of hers who convinced her to make the jump to teaching. And while she was hesitant at first, she now loves it.
As do her many students.
