This time of year the colors of the season, purple, green, and yellow are splattered everywhere.

Clothing, decorations, and of course everyone's favorite seasonal treat: King Cakes.

During the last half century the residents of Rayne have been able to find the colors mixing and blending together on the king cakes coming out of Gautreaux's Donut Shop.

A small family establishment the store is over seen by Cherie Gautreaux and her husband, who took it over from his parents about five years ago.

Growing up in Rayne, Cherie remembers visiting the store when she was a girl going in for donuts in the morning and enjoying one of their plate lunches in the afternoon.

While the plate lunches are a thing of the past you the store is still very much establishment, with kids and grandkids at some point or another working the counter.

Along the way Gautreaux's decided they would get into the king cake business, and now Cherie says it's their busiest time of year.

The earliest employees getting there around 10:30 p.m. to start the prep work on the famous cakes, to make sure they're ready for the daily rush of orders.

Cherie, though, says that despite the long hours of the season she wouldn't have it any other way.
