Spirit of Acadiana: Healing House candles

It's the story of some lonely martini glasses just looking for a home.

As we all know, COVID-19 disrupted a number of activities in the area, one of them being Healing House's great Martinis event. So on the downside they were stuck with a number of martini glasses. On the positive side, that gave some very creative philanthropists a chance to show what they can do.

"We probably had a couple hundred left, maybe a little bit more, because we didn't get to have our big party," said Kim Thackston with Healing House.

To the rescue came the guys from the Bourbon Royalty Candle Company out of Scott. Owners Jamie and Rusty Phillips have a friend who works with Healing House.

"He actually messaged us and said, 'We have some martini glasses. Can you do anything with them?'"

And those guys made a quick decision to repurpose martini glasses into Joie de Vivre candles.

Jamie Phillips explains, "The candle fragrance that we've chosen is called 'Joie de Vivre' and that means 'The Joy of Life.'"

With the candles made, Healing House and Bourbon Royalty had to find a home, one that Charlotte Cryer of Caroline & Company not only supplied, but took things to another level.

"Absolutely," she said. "We are donating 100% of the sales of these candles back to Healing House just to help Healing House and the community."

And there's more - Bourbon Royalty donated the cost of materials plus will give Healing House $15 from every martini candle they sell.

"It hits all of the emotional buttons," said Thackston. "This is something that they created, they came up with this idea, honestly. We didn't even ask."

Glasses from four Martinis events have been 'candle-ized' by Bourbon Royalty. And it's a prime example of creativity - taking what looks to be defeat and turning it into a philanthropic victory.

So the old saying about this - or it's a new one - "When life gives you COVID, you make a candle and touch a bunch of lives."
