Acadiana Animal Aid and Walnut joined GMA on Monday to talk about their upcoming Adventure Kids Camp sessions.
This is Animal Aid’s fifth consecutive year hosting the summer camp which caters to children ages 6 to 12. The camp introduces Acadiana children to everything that goes into taking care of pets while building an appreciation for animal life and protection.
Campers will be introduced to shelter dogs and cats and taught how to properly care for them, what to do when encountering a stray animal, what it means to ‘Adopt, don’t Shop’, as well as the importance of vaccinations and regular veterinarian visits. There will also be opportunities for an up close and personal view at the processes that go into running a shelter facility how Animal Aid works to save animals from euthanasia via their transport program.
Alongside the educational aspect of the program, Animal Aid says campers will also take part in fun, creative activities like arts and crafts. Those activities include: homemade dog treats and chew toys, cement paw-print stepping stones, and various painting/drawing/coloring activities.
One camp day is even dedicated to giving the shelter pups a bath. Campers are encouraged to bring their swimsuits.
There are three sessions during the summer:
- June 10 – June 13
- July 8 – July 11
- July 29 – August 1
Each camp session is limited to 24 participants.
Sessions begin promptly at 9:00 am each morning and end around 12:00 pm.
Director Heidi Paterson says that the program is important for teaching children about kindness and the responsibility that goes into taking care of animals.
