On Saturday, August 10, organizers and volunteers with the Love Our Schools initiative will lend a hand to clean up and touch up Carencro Heights Elementary, all in the name of love.

A point of focus will be the school's cafeteria and its adjoining stage area. There, volunteers will tackle painting, refinishing floors and retouching problem areas on walls and doors.

"To see so many community members come in and help us out, not just from Carencro but from Acadiana, too. It's very special to us, and to our kids as well," says Assistant Principal Gabrielle Mergist.

At the school's playground, equipment will get a face-lift and a patch of dirt will be transformed with the installation of a brand new play set .

These updates are some of the most anticipated by students, including 1st grader Alayna Thomas and 5th grader Kylie Deville.

"It means just being able to relax instead of worrying about where you're allowed and not allowed to go," says Kylie on the playground's improvements.

Alayna echoed the excitement about the project. "I feel good about it," she says. "It makes me feel good inside."

Clean-ups will occur all across the school on Saturday. And another place getting some much needed attention is the school's courtyard. The shady, yet sunny spot will be transformed into a more student friendly space.

With new landscaping and picnic tables, the space will become a learning area where students can enjoy outdoor education time year round.

All of the work begins on August 10, when thousands of volunteers will show staff and students at Carencro Heights and seven other schools in Lafayette that somebody truly cares.
