Before your claims adjuster shows up, record all the damage you see. Check your A.C., your furnace, and other dormant appliances. Take photos or videos of damage and have an item description, approximate date of purchase and what it would cost to replace or repair it.

Protect your property from further damage. This is your responsibility as a homeowner. Save receipts for what you spend and submit them to your insurance company for reimbursement. Remember that payments for temporary repairs are part of the total settlement.

Keep track of any and all living expenses while you are displaced from your home. Your insurer may be able to reimburse a large sum of it.

Get bids from as many contractors as you can. You don't have to go with the provider your insurer recommends. once you collect bids and decide on a contractor, your insurer's adjuster will need to approve the cost.
