Vitalant makes final push for National Blood Donation month

National Blood Donation month is coming to an end, and Vitalant is making a final push to get the community to donate.

Abby Breidenbach was LIVE on Thursday at their donation center on Bertrand Drive with how to get involved.

Vitalant says that all blood is being accepted, but there is a specific need for Type O donors. O is almost always in short supply and is in high demand by hospitals.

As the universal blood type, O is essential for emergency transfusions and immune deficient infants, according to Vitalant.

The process for giving blood is not difficult.

Donors can show up to any blood donation center and go through a quick questionnaire to determine eligibility.

Vitalant says that it's a good idea to drink lots of water and eat before making a blood donation.

While January is National Blood Donation Month, Vitalant encourages everyone to consider giving blood throughout the year.
