The Lafayette Parish NAACP Unit #6060 Young Adult Committee presents In Observance of Juneteenth A Drive-In Memorial. This year’s theme is “Honoring Black Lives.” The event will take place on the corner of Buick Street and Louisiana Avenue.

Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Cel-Liberation Day and the Black Fourth of July. It's a mile marker, celebrating the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the United States in 1865.

This as a drive in event to observe social distancing. You're encouraged to bring your lawn chairs or blankets for those who wish to sit outside their vehicles. A face mask is required when socializing with others, and there will be extras on site. Free COVID-19 Testing, plus information on how you can help stop the spread, will also be available throughout the duration of this event.

"It's going to be memorial service basically for Juneteenth. We're going to have gospel groups coming out, Reggea groups, guitarists. We're opening it up to everyone in the community but it is for black people to learn their heritage that goes beyond just slavery," says Devon Norman, Young Adult Committee Chairman of the Lafayette chapter of the NAACP.

The event will close with a candlelight/headlight/cell phone light vigil honoring the Black Lives Matter movement.
