Lafayette churches welcome Lent with Ash Wednesday services

Several churches in Acadiana will begin the Lenten season with services on Ash Wednesday.

In Lafayette, church locations are opening their doors for the faithful to receive their ashes.

The Diocese of Lafayette will usher in Lent with a marathon reading of The Bible at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Opelousas.

The reading begins February 26, at 12:30 pm and will continue until the first Sunday of Lent, March 1 at 4:30 pm.

Bishop Douglas Deshotel will celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass and the Distribution of Ashes on February 26, at 12:05 pm at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

At the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Lafayette, Ash Wednesday masses will be held at 6:00 and 6:00 pm with a Prayer Service at 12:00 pm. Ashes will be distributed every hour on the hour between those times.

St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Lafayette will host two services at 12:00 pm and another at 7:00 pm with the imposition of ashes.

Covenant United Methodist Church will hold their Ash Wednesday service at 6:00 pm.

At Asbury United Methodist Church, services begin at 12:00 pm and at 6:00 pm in the church sanctuary.

Drive-thru ashes

Asbury UMC's Metairie Center location (Centre Sarcelle Blvd) in Youngsville will offer an Ashes to Go service from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

First Lutheran Church in Lafayette will offer drive-thru ashes from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm at their location on W Farrel Road.
