ABBY'S APPS: SEW YOU CARE — Sew You Care is a global network connecting volunteers sewing face masks with the people who need them most, and from its inception the group hasn't stopped growing.
"Within the first 12 hours of launching we had 800 people within the first 24 we had 1,400. It escalated to a point that at the end of week 2 we had 6,000 people sewing. We have requests from facilities all over the country as far as the Virgin islands, Canada, South Africa, Germany, Japan," says Jessy Broughton Gillespie, who founded Sew You Care.
For her new effort to be efficient, Jessy said there was a serious need for information and communication.
"We wanted to have data about the facilities that needed help. We needed to talk to them, find out what they needed, can you wear the masks, are you exposed to COVID-19. We had to put in a priority system, a ticketing system. We had to build all this information from the ground up and we were struggling," she said.
Enter Imperian, a Lafayette company that designs apps for other companies.
"When we heard about sew you care we automatically knew that we wanted to help out because its an amazing cause and we knew that we could really take that load off of them. When you try to do anything manually, once the demand grows, it can be so overwhelming," says Amy Theriot with Imperian.
The app they created has a database of who needs masks, when and where they need them and who will make and send those masks.
The app is used by those sewing and works with the website. If you need a mask or want to get involved visit sewyoucare.com.
