Whether it's a wintry mix, a hurricane or high winds, when tracking severe weather in Acadiana, there is one app to use that stands out above the rest.

"The KATC Weather app is different from your typical app because it's geared toward Acadiana. In fact, our meteorologists edit the forecast data you see on the phone," says KATC Chief Meteorologist Rob Perillo.

You won't find more detailed, specific information anywhere in the app store.

"One of the biggest perks of using the KATC app is that we can deliver video, video forecasts straight to you at any given time. If there's a big severe weather event or we're anticipating a big weather event, we're gearing those daily videos to the weather that will impact you at home," says Perillo.

If you allow notifications you'll get alerts for things like lightning proximity, ensuring you're never unprepared for a weather event.

"When we're having a weather event I make the app send radar updates every couple of hours so you can stay abreast of developing weather situations especially when we have severe or threatening weather you get specific graphics for your location depending on the severity of the storms and where those storms are," says Perillo.

This can be especially helpful at times like this week.

"We're going to be sending out temperature updates, frozen precipitation updates if we need them. So that's one of the perks of using the KATC app rather than any other generic app you can get out there," adds Perillo.
